How to Create a New Modifier Group

A modifier group is a collection of options presented to customers when they select a menu item — for example, choosing a size, picking a sauce, or adding an extra. The group itself defines the rules (required or optional, how many selections), while the individual options within it (e.g. Small, Regular, Large) are called modifier options and are managed separately under the Modifier Options tab.

Steps:

  1. Navigate to Your Menu → Modifiers

  2. Click Create Modifier Group at the top right and complete the following fields:

    • Modifier Group Name — An internal reference name used to find and link this group to menu items. Customers will not see this name unless no Display Name is entered. Use a descriptive name that distinguishes groups with similar options. (e.g. "Smoothie Size" and "Coffee Size" rather than just "Size", since the two may have different pricing)

    • Display Name — The heading customers see above the modifier options on the Customer App. (e.g. "Choose your size", "Select your sauce")

    • Display Group as Expanded? — When toggled ON, all modifier options are immediately visible when a customer opens the menu item. When toggled OFF, customers must tap the Display Name to reveal the options. It is recommended to toggle ON for required modifiers, so customers are clearly prompted to make a selection.

    • Is This Required?

      • Required ON — Customers must select at least the minimum number of options before they can add the item to their order (e.g. drink size must be chosen)

      • Required OFF — The modifier becomes optional, suitable for add-ons such as extra sides or toppings

    • Minimum Selection — The minimum number of options a customer must choose. Automatically set to 1 when Required is ON. Increase this if the item requires multiple simultaneous selections (e.g. 2 sauce choices included with the meal)

    • Maximum Selection — The maximum number of options a customer may choose. For single-choice modifiers (e.g. size), set both Minimum and Maximum to 1. For add-ons where customers can choose any number, leave this blank and tick No Maximum Selection instead.

    • No Maximum Selection — Tick this when the customer should be able to add as many options as they like. Best suited for upsell add-ons.

  3. Click Create or Create & Create Another

Next step: After creating the modifier group, you will need to add modifier options to it and link it to your menu items. See the guides How to Link a Modifier Option to a Modifier Group and How to Link a Modifier Group to a Menu Item.
